1920's costume

5/15/2015

I was commisioned to design a costume using the 'Water for Elephants' film as inspiration.

After some fabric and bead samples, we came up with the below.

I love the draping straps, which actually also hide some really firm straps to keep this backless bodysuit close and secure.

It has a modesty sash, to ensure freedom of movement without being self conscious, and of course lots of pearls beads - I wanted to keep them hemming close to the era to give it a 1920's feel.
There are also a few AB crystals, which can't be seen to easily at a glance, but will catch the light nicely as the client moves around.

This was a really lovely little project to do.

MEN, FASHION & VINTAGE  EVENTS

12/29/2014

I get asked quite a lot by guys what they should wear to my events. Girls tend to get all the attention - shops trying to sell them stuff, lots of fashions blogs, magazines, runway images, and vintage photos.
For the guys it can take a little more research.

I have worked in fashion for 9 years, and been part of the vintage scene for roughly 8 years - There is nothing better than spotting a chap who has got his vintage attire down to a T!

My recent advice to a friend was if all else fails, grab a cardigan from a vintage shop, throw on a white tee and slick back your hair for a 1950's look.!

The below images are taken from Autumn/Winter vogue.com catwalk shows.

now all you need is an event to go to!! .....

When researching fashion vogue.com has all of the latest runway shows from all around the world.
The big designers always take inspiration from vintage clothing to create classic, saleable pieces.
Of course they sometimes go a bit metal on colour and prints - so use their ideas and maybe tone it down a notch.

If you don't want to wear outlandish prints (which if you mix and match contrast of tonal colours, and sizes of prints, you can blow peoples mind in a good way) Then for you Sir ..... it will be about layering. Layering textures, tonal colours, and types of fabric. Take a look in the gallery.

Don't take catwalk latterly if you don't want to - you don't have to wear ankle bashing trousers if they make you feel like an idiot.
And for the risk takers, own it!
Trial and error has to happen in order to learn, and who cares what others think ... I clearly don't!

Have fun and keep it dapper!

Picture
Featuring the vocals of David Wyatt, The Moonlights’ catalogue of classic tunes will delight everyone. From the cool soul of Sam Cook and Bill Withers to the classic sounds of The Stones and Hendrix, and with everything from Jeff Buckley to Gogol Bordello in between.

As always, there will be a burlesque stall at the front of house and the optional dress code is 1930's - 1950's!

After meeting Nick years ago we had mentioned doing a shoot many times ....... and it happened... here are the results.

Nick is working on a digital project, in which these photos will look nothing like they do here!

In the meantime I have some gorgeous costume shots of my updated Serpentine Seductress burlesque and fire act.

We also had a little fun on the roof top just because we could!

Gem until you go blind

Bra and knickers set I did for myself - a lot of performers have it announced on stage how many gems are on their costume.

I don't count, all I can say is there is A LOT on my diamond girl costume!

I literally gem until I can't see properly, and then I have to stop.

The second routine I ever created 'Down in Mexico'. I still use the same underwear, and added this corset further down the line.

This was my first commission after coming back from costuming in Dubai.

The Girl In The Glass - asked for 1920's style set, with moon and star theme on a black base.
This is what I came up with.
Picture
So in my refined technical language I basically get a base to work on - sew some shit on and then glue some shit on.

Due to my obsessive nature when costuming I go into a fair bit of detail, and some really nice pieces have come out of that.

Most things are one off designs, working with performers they need to be - so no copying!

I updated my white fan dance costume last year, and this is the results. Below is a video of it all in action.

Photography into art

Back in April 2011 myself and Grace Elkin went out into the wilds of Leicestershire to do a spare of the moment photo shoot. The latex dress by Kitty Creme was an experiment, and far from looking fetishy like I expected, the 1940's hair and make up and the rough surroundings made for a pretty contrast of layers and textures.

The above fast became our favourite shot in editing, and has since become the image that most strongly signifies my work with Grace. We have done many beautiful images together, but something draws me back to this image year after year.

Artist, Brian Tull from Nashville TN, spotted it on facebook and got in touch about using it to paint from.
His style is amazingly life like. Painting sections of images on huge canvas's.
It was great to be sent updates on how it was going, and to see the methodical process he uses to create such photo realistic artwork.

Naming the piece 'We Walk By Faith, Not By Sight' Not surprisingly it sold pretty quickly.

Brian is now working on his second image of me using a photo by Paul Needham.
Again chopping me off just above the lip, he seems to have a thing for my lips and shoulders!

It's very exiting to have such a talented artist want to paint photos of me. And a big credit to Grace and Paul for the lovely composition, depth and great lighting that make these images worthy of being worked onto canvas.

The image by Paul Needham was a Betty Page inspired shoot done with Aurora Toxique.
It's quite funny that people who see Brains painting will not know that my desk is actually a person!

Where: Corfu
When: Summer 2013
Who: Produced and directed by Kaya George
www.kayageorge.com and me Talulah Blue

Not long after making a matching bra top and high waisted shorts from a 1950's pattern I got a call from Kaya George telling me she would be spending the summer in Corfu, and as I would be visiting she wanted to do some filming.

I put together the outfit I made for filming, and she had brought along a vintage dress and some other bits..
We experimented with a GoPro in the sea, but unfortunately it was being temperamental, so we didn't get and footage - one to save for next time!

View from our yacht, and by yacht I mean pedalo!
Picture
Kaya had some ideas for a fashion based film, so we made the most of the areas we had seen while bombing up and down the mouton roads in the car.

Dress hanging out to dry after filming.
