The Burger King Showgirl ProjectSometimes the most exciting opportunities arrive completely out of the blue. A few weeks ago, I received an email that I genuinely thought was a prank at first — a creative agency working with Burger King wanted to commission me to design a Showgirl-inspired presentation box for a campaign. If you know me, you’ll know this is exactly my world: glamour, glitter, feathers, rhinestones, and theatrical flair — but translated into packaging design instead of costumes and stage wear. Not only that, but I was a graphic designer for 7 years working in high street fashion, so I was beyond exited, and felt like I was a great match for the project. This is also why I am keen to take you through my design process. I played around with the face, if she's a showgirl - did she need some make up? Was lipstick too much? I played around with background texture, would I use printed back ground? Or an actual fabric? Burger King were really easy to work with, quick to make choices, and knew what they wanted. Dream client really! Gems were the easy part, that is my day in and day out .... the stylised, painterly brushed wing however, were designed very quickly, but getting them to stick to glitter was an absolute nightmare! I ended up going with vinyl sticker print, it worked fine when we tested it, but the granule size of the final glitter fabric I went with was larger, after several mediocre attempts at getting it to stick, it turned out using spray glue - by spraying it onto a surface, then dipping a paint brush in the spray and painting on the back FINALLY worked enough for what was needed. We worked through concepts that nodded to Vegas showgirls, classic cabaret, and a little touch of my own personal style — the kind of costume sparkle that happens when you walk into the room and everyone looks. Little did I know the design process was very much the easy part! Having a crazy short amount of time to order materials, test lots of them out, make several prototypes until it all started to come together. Portions of the projects were blind faith! 10 days later, 7 glitter card and fabric samples later, package after package of different gem, and 10 boxes made ..... here she is. Anyway ..... guess what colours my next costume will be in!??
